[The rather undignified remark earns a snort despite Jade's circumstances.]
Yeah, I'm sure you can find a crust of bread or something among this lot.
[Actually, it does look like the hunters had set up camp in this little stony alcove by the beach. Despite the locale, the weather leaves something to be desired, with its overcast skies and light drizzle of rain coming down from the rumbling clouds. Jade sighs at the woman's not-so-subtle warning.
[Though seemingly given the chance to lean on her for support, Jade looks reluctant still.]
You and me both. It's not like I planned to get jumped by highwaymen... or get rescued by beautiful women.
[That last part comes out in a quiet mumble, followed by a nervous chuckle. She's really trying to hold her shit together right now.]
[Looking away, Jade's reply to the first comment shot back, is seemingly ignored. But in all actuality, Kainé mutters under her breath; barely audible to those with normal senses. Obviously she knows nothing about this woman.]
A crust of bread is better than I get some nights...
[As for the weather, Kainé is full glad for it. It means it was less likely she had Shades getting in her way when she headed out to this place.
She rolls her eyes at the other woman's hesitancy to accept her help and, regardless of any protests, loops her arm under her shoulder. And then, just as though Jade were light as a feather, Kainé effortly rises from the ground to bring Jade to her feet, momentarily lifting a little too high and then letting her down gently. She looks away again and mumbles an apology, her own insecurities over her possesssion showing, right as those key words drop from Jade's lips. Which, of course, with her own enhanced senses, Kainé hears loud and clear.
Kainé freezes in place, her gold eyes widening and her pale cheeks dusting a rosy pink.
It takes her a second to recover, and she clears her throat pretending that the words didn't shock the shit out of her, before continuing on her way.
Ironically, she heads the opposite way of where any food stores would be, instead opting to find the nearest exit to get Jade to safety. Like hell she'd admit to it though. She'll just make some excuse about getting lost and it being too much of a pain in the ass to go back in. The whole way, aside from having no trouble supporting the other woman, Kainé walks in silence.]
[Jade's senses were, in fact, not normal. She wasn't superhuman or anything, but she'd long since trained her hearing to be sharper to make up for her half vision.
[Due to this, a pang of empathy hits, as Jade more than understands the hungry nights spent on cold floors. There have been days, sometimes weeks she'd gone without a sufficient meal. At this point, it doesn't even always register that she's hungry, much like she is now, her stomach twisting.
[It probably comes as no surprise just how light she is when Kainé helps to hold up the beanpole of a woman, that she nearly flings her. It's no wonder that those hunters were able to cart her around as though she were mere cargo -- in a way, she was.
[More than relieved to be spared from such a fate, Jade opts to keep the goading of her savior to a minimum. Especially when she's able to get a good look at the chaos of the camp made around her, namely all the bodies left in the other woman's wake. As Kainé goes to inspect the loot, there's a chest by the dying campfire with crates of vegetables and fruit -- likely stolen from caravans traversing the King's Mountain Pass.]
Ah, you did this all by yourself?
[Jade half-expected someone else to appear, but so far it seems to be just the two of them, and that's odd...
[Well, no, not really. It's not like she hasn't known people more than capable of taking on a whole group of assailants on their own. It's just rare, though. Even Jade herself has limits to what she can do solo, hence the crude amulet she wears around her neck... The soul bound to it and herself had gotten her out of many binds, when her hands are free to summon them -- a condition she had been deprived of when she had her hands tied behind her back.]
[She had indeed noticed how light the other woman was. At least when she lifted her fully off the ground. Kainé briefly wonders exactly how long these people have held her prisoner.
And has absolutely no remorse for killing them. Not like the shade in her head would let her. Which, oddly, he's been sort of quiet. He's still there, lurking, she can feel him, but why he's not talking shit is beyond her.
They're about to walk past the camp, which Kainé had laid waste to, when Jade calls attention to her... handiwork. Which draws her own attention to the boxes of food. She's thinking about if she should grab some, or continue getting the woman the hell out of there. However, Jade seems pretty starved. And she did come for food.
Kainé carefully sets the woman down and goes to inspect the foodstuffs, answering absently as she kneels down.]
Yeah, I did.
[Looking over the offerings, she unshoulders the satchel she had brought and stuffs as much in as she possibly can. Carrying it and the other woman won't be a problem, the problem is she didn't bring enough storage.
She throws the bag back over her shoulder and returns to Jade's side, once more looping the woman's arm around her neck and her own around Jade's back.
Kainé is quiet as they continue their way through the corridors. She still can't get what Jade said out of her head. Was the woman fucking with her? She didn't even take it back when Kainé all but threw her; obviously spilling the beans on what she is.
How many shade-possessed are there, after all?
Then they reach the hole in the wall where Kainé had entered, Kainé summons one of her swords to her hand in a shower of sparks.
It's raining. There could be shades about.
Which is why she probably shouldn't leave Jade here on her own. Regardless of if she can fight, she's in no condition to do so.
So once they emerge, Kainé just continues walking as though she hadn't said what she did earlier. Once out of sight of the ruins, Kainé pauses and looks around. For one, they have yet to encounter any shades, when normally the damn things would take every advantage of the dim weather. Second, the place she camped out the night before isn't where she left it.]
What the fuck?
[That's when, from inside her head, she hears what sounds like a yawn and the shade she shares a body with, finally speaks up. What the hell, Sunshine. I've been bored off my ass while you've been on your little rescue mission! When are you gonna get back to the killin'?]
You sleep?
[Kainé replies quietly with a snort, sarcasm, and a little disbelief.
Only when I'm bored out of my fucking skull! C'mon, Sunshine! I'm hungry!
[While Kainé wanders off to investigate foodstuffs, Jade takes a moment to lean against a large rock, hand pressed to her ribs where the pain still lingers. At the confirmation, she only makes a quiet sound, acknowledging the woman's potential combat prowess, likely leagues superior to her own. There's a reason Jade has taken to her newfound magical skills, opting only to use her daggers when backed into a corner.
[Without warning, a sharp sting shoots through her brain. It's not much unlike the feelings she gets when she's connected to one of her ghosts, or experiencing a vision. Jade lets out a hiss between her teeth, a hand flying to her forehead, pushing aside her bangs.
[And then she hears the voice. Not her own, not Kainé's, but someone else entirely. Male. Snide. Cruel. It's not sound in her ears so much as it is in her soul, not much unlike her connection to the lost echoes she's collected.
[Cradling her head in both hands, she groans, the voice not going away so long as it persisted in Kainé's head as well.
[Eventually, Jade snaps, throwing her hands from her face, a particularly wild and manic flame in her eyes.]
Hey, what the fuck? [She sounds harsher than she meant to be, but only because she's genuinely disconcerted now. If it weren't for the fact that Kainé was seemingly talking to someone, Jade would be quicker to wonder if she was losing her sanity all over again.] I thought you said you were alone?
[Technically, Kainé made no such claim. But try reasoning with a splitting ache tearing through her brain -- it won't work out.]
[The first hiss she attributes to the woman's expression of, understandable, lingering pain. It's when Jade groans and Kainé looks over her shoulder to see her holding her head, that she immediately tenses and summons her blades, fixing her gaze on Jade.
Tyrann on the other hand, goes giddy with sadistic glee over his own assumptions.
Now you're speakin' my language! I didn't know you had it in ya, Sunshine! I'm gonna enjoy watching you slit her throat. Betrayal's one of my favorite dishes, kya ha ha! Make it a good...]
Shut it!
[It's all the response Kainé graces the shade with as her eyes dart wildly around their surroundings; sure that if there was anyone, or anything here, she would have sensed it.
Until Jade's sudden outburst, which only gets the shade laughing sadistically in victory.
Kainé's expression hardens as she prepares to strike Jade down, again, cursing herself for relaxing her guard when she's learned over and over, the hard way, that no one can be trusted.
But Jade honestly seems puzzled, and Kainé blinks in her own confusion, slightly lowering her sword. That doesn't stop her from shooting back.]
What the fuck are you on about? I didn't say shit! And I am. Unless you think that goddamn corpse over there, is about to join our merry little band?
[It's the mention of slitting her throat, coupled with Kainé taking out her blades that forces Jade into high alert once again. She's seen her fair share of twisted individuals in this mad world to know that letting her guard down for a second could lead to death. To top it off, trusting the wrong people have gotten her into trouble on more than one occasion.
[A mistake she's not willing to repeat on this day when Jade's weedy stature shoots straight, her arms drawn out on either side of her. Magic radiates from her gloved hands into shocks of blue sparks in one and an icy cold mist in the other, both threatening to take the initiative where she stands if given the excuse.]
What d'you think I am, deaf? You weren't exactly being very subtle with your conversation over there, Sunshine.
[The name spits out like venom. Whatever pain and exhaustion that once flooded her body becomes an afterthought when adrenaline kicks in, all too quick to trigger fight or flight. In most instances, Jade would prefer the flight option... but she'd rather not escape one group of hunters only to be pursued by an equally -- if not deadlier -- predator at her heel. No, she knows what she needs to do. She has to take care of this now.
[The sparks in her left hand zap up to her elbow -- a clear warning for what'll happen if Kainé gets closer or make good on the man's suggestion, wherever the heck he is. There's a flicker of light in her eyes; magic radiating from her aura, cold and pale all around her.]
[Seeing someone react negatively to magic is the least surprising thing that day. Were Jade back in her homeland of Nehrim, and suddenly awoke with magic as she did on Enderal, she'd have very likely been burned at the stake. Though the people of this country are more accepting, there's still plenty of doubt and fear among the simpler folk.
[Kainé does not strike her as a simple person, however. And the mention of "Shade" only serves to confuse Jade even more, as she rattles her brain trying to place it in the category of something familiar. She's ready to hurl a spike of ice at the other woman the second she seems poised to attack...
[Then her tune changes.
[Still not lowering her hands from her sides, Jade does give pause. She squints, brows furrowed. Her eyes dart around Kainé, unable to visibly perceive the unknown party with the voice she so badly would prefer to put a spike in instead.]
My name is Jade, not "Honey-Cheeks", asshole.
[Typically she is endeared to nicknames. This one makes her skin crawl, though. Maybe because it's in the same vein as "Sunshine" for this woman, which makes Jade all the more loathe to repeat it.]
So if he's a... Shade, then what the heck does that make you? You're sure as fuck no Phasmalist.
[Jade's pretty sure she would be able to feel it if she were. Not to mention this aura is quite... otherworldly, in very much the most literal sense.]
[Kainé looks away, a look of distaste crossing her features. However, since she takes her eyes off of the other woman, this should show Jade that she's no longer planning to attack.]
Shades are... [There's a brief moment where she seems to be contemplating something, but then her expression hardens again and her gaze returns to meet Jades. She does not move her hands at all. All of the venom is in her eyes.] MONSTERS! Monsters that deserve nothing more than a painful, agonizing, death!
[It's clear she's got a history with the creatures; and an intense hatred. Surprisingly, even though Kainé had just said the thing talking to them is a shade, it still laughs sadistically.]
I'm Shade-possessed. His name's Tyrann. [She dismisses her weapons fully.] And I'm Kainé.
[Quite possibly against her better judgement... the charge of magic gradually tapers in Jade's hands. The flickers of shock and the freezing mist crackles until there's no sign of the offending magic that would have been hurled Kainé's way, if she (and the apparent voice in her head) made good on those threats.
[The more the other woman speaks, the safer it feels to lower her hackles. Jade still feels pumped of adrenaline, that rush to fight and kill... but it soon wanes into nothing more than a whisper.]
I... see.
[A brow arches, as Jade folds her arms.]
Were I a more experienced Phasmalist, I'd offer to, I don't know... try and expel that piece of work from your body. But I can't promise that it wouldn't just do more harm than good, so...
[Shrug. Even with her powers as an Emissary, there are still limits to what she's capable of. There were no memories from the past that she could recall that'd be helpful in that regard, either.]
Never heard of "Shades", though. At least none of the kind that can simply take over someone's body like that. [Except maybe for one, but Jade swore to secrecy when it came to Calia's... condition. Surely it's not the same case for Kainé, right?]
Don't worry. Someday I'm gonna strangle him with his own guts! [In a manner of speaking.] Just like that shade that...
[She cuts herself off and Tyrann laughs; a mad, sadistic, vulgar, and fierce cackle. Keep dreamin', Sunshine! I've hocked loogies scaryer than you! Bwaaaah ha ha ha! I said it before, I'll say it again; good luck with that! Kya ha ha ha!
Kainé growls and angrily scoffs, glaring at nothing while her hands clench into fists. She takes a deep breath, her chest visibly rising and falling before calming and turning her attention back to Jade.]
Let's get the fuck outta this dump. My camp's not far. Take what you can carry. [Kainé nods to the other woman's hands.] You got enough left in you to hurl magic, you can pull your own, goddamn weight.
[Of course, if Kainé sees Jade struggling, she'll make some excuse and help her out. She's just, Like. That.
She heads back over to the collection of loot, stuffs her bag, and throws it over her shoulder; tilting her head a little at Jade as if to say, 'Well? Get on with it!']
[The brow goes up even more at Kainé's self-assurance.]
Uh-huh.
[Setting aside questioning the logistics of how one can strangle a voice in their own head with anyone's intestines, that's all Jade opts to dignify such a remark with.
[Even worse is the fact that she can hear the voice herself, and it's grating. She grimaces.] Damn. I think I'd lose my mind, having to listen to that all day.
[And that's saying something from someone with questionable sanity, herself. It would make sense as to why Kainé is the way she is, at least to some extent. There seems to be more to the story, but now is a terrible time to pry.
[Prompted to vamoose, Jade is quick to shift priorities and gather what little she could -- including some of her confiscated gear found in an open chest by the campfire. It's a makeshift backpack, crafted together with homemade materials she threw together on her own. Crude, but gets the job done. Inside are some talismans that she's infinitely more relieved to see. She takes a moment to put one of them around her neck -- a silver necklace made of equally crude metal and bone, with a swirling violet stone at the center -- before her body visibly relaxes and she's ready to leave. Without saying it, she feels... safer, now.]
You'd set up camp out here, with all the shit that's been going on?
[The fact that Kainé isn't exactly... from Vyn hadn't quite registered to Jade yet. She should've figured something would happen when she helped Yuslan open a fucking doorway through the universe with the Planeswalker, but that seemed like a one and done deal. That's a chapter safely put behind them.
[Nevermind the logistics of it. It's the visual threat that matters. As for the comment about her camping out where anything could attack without warning...]
That's the point. Good for you for figuring it out. Maybe you're not as much of an idiot as I originally pegged you for.
You think I want just any asshole just wandering into my camp?
Hell no! Keeps stupid fucks from even thinking about it with all the shit that's been going on.
[Even though Kainé has taken point, she's still keeping careful tabs on the other woman, in case she really does need help.
The necklace intrigues her though, and her immediate thought is whether it might have been a gift. Something special, like her own Lunar Tear hair ornament.
Which she received from one of the only people who ever accepted her, regardless of what she is. The important thing was who she is.
Even if he didn't know the whole of it. Somehow, she knows without a doubt, that he'd accept that too.
A pang of regret hits her as she remembers their separation. "I've got my own shit to do. Personal shit." is what she had said.
And then she walked away, just like that.
Because no matter how much she wanted to, she couldn't stay with them. She couldn't infringe on their happiness when he and his sister had finally been reunited. There was no way the village would accept her.
She couldn't risk hurting him or taking the only family he had left.
It was a pipe dream for others; not for someone like her.
Since their separation, she's been lonely, with only the Shade's shit talk to keep her company. Not that she'd ever admit it.
But no matter how much she tried to distract herself by concentrating her efforts on her own survival, or even just killing Shades for something to do to keep herself from being restless, the fact of the matter is, she misses him.
Subconsciously, she glances back at Jade, a tiny spark of hope over something she dare not linger too long on, flickers from somewhere within her.
Instead, she yells over her shoulder with mock irritance.]
God you're so fucking slow! Am I gonna have to carry your pansy-ass along with all this shit, the whole way to back to camp?!
[There. That should help bury any possibility of that happening.
Thankfully, the whole time she's pondering this, Tyrann knows what's good for him and keeps his goddamn trap shut!
Once they reach the crumbling gap in the wall that Kainé had entered through, she glances back at Jade one last time to make sure she's still handling herself OK, and steps outside.
The cool air, despite the rain and dreariness and what usually comes with it, feels nice, clean and relaxing after being cooped up in the bandits' hideout. She slows to a halt when they're a good distance away, amber eyes scanning their surroundings.
Something's off.
Nothing looks familiar. Not to mention they traveled way too long without a Shade attack. Kainé grumbles and expresses her bewilderment aloud.]
What the actual fuck?
[She had been looking forward to plopping her ass down and stuffing her face with their haul.
Kainé has an annoying feeling that it's gonna be awhile.]
[What a charming young woman this is. Everyone else in Jade's life at the moment seems to so eager to sever ties as soon as they get -- why would this be any different? It's because of those experiences, coupled with her own, that Jade is able to see right through what Kainé is doing. There was a time in which she would have done the same thing...
[These days, it seems that all she does is take it. Never would have pegged herself to be a masochist, but here she is, when she could be on her way back to the city right about now.
[But she doesn't. She can't. At least not to return to the inevitable tasks that are ahead. Instead, she fiddles with the amulet. It may not be a gift, but within contains something... precious. Well, they all do, but this one in particular she keeps close.
[There's a fleeting moment Jade contemplated bringing Zar'Ah out, just to see how Kainé would react. Return the favor she's being given. But Kainé seems like more the "fight" than "flight" type, and Jade has put Zar'Ah through enough lately that she's soon to abandon the notion.]
I'll go whatever pace I feel like, thanks. [Jade just remarks flatly, resting her hands on the straps of her backpack as she steps out under the misty clouds. The chill and the rain feel nice, after being tied up for who knows how long. Despite her choice words, Jade doesn't seem as peeved by Kainé's attitude as she might expect, instead rolling the insults over like water off a duck's feathers.
[Rather, she is bemused when the other woman seems lost. Jade pauses, blinks.]
Hm. Did you misplace your camp, by chance? [There's a tilt of levity in her tone, before it fades.
[She glances towards the main road, leading down a winding path between trees and foliage. There's a moment of hesitation, before she speaks up again.]
So, assuming your camp doesn't decide to return home from the war any minute now... Ark's actually not all that far from here. I've got a small hideout in the Undercity. People don't tend to bother me down there.
[Not doing... whatever with that amulet was a wise move. Kainé is absolutely the type to strike first and there won't be a need for questions. Running just isn't an option; much to Weiss' dismay.
Kainé just shrugs, not giving the retort a second thought. What she does react to, is the burn about her camp. She crosses her arms under her bust and narrows her eyes.]
Don't be stupid. We probably just came out a different way. [Kainé does actually listen to the idea though, but looks hesitant at the mention of going to a city. Her expression drops and she averts her gaze.]
I don't go into cities. I'm not...
[The hand gripping her Shade arm, subconsciously slides a little higher out of her own discomfort.]
[There's a hint of exasperation when Jade heaves out a high.]
For fuck's sake...
[Why should she even bother? Most people she knows either end up dying or rightfully leaving her in the end. So what does she care if Kainé wants to risk her neck for no reason? Sure, she seems like she can handle herself well enough, but so is Jade, and she still managed to get caught unawares. All it takes is one mistake, and it's all over.
[But still... Why does she have to care so goddamn much?]
Look, sleeping outside is straight-up suicide. You got rabid animals, people losing their minds to the Red Madness. Not to mention Nehrimese who've been ordered to kill anyone on sight...
[The last one is a bit of a punch to the gut. Being an outlander herself, she has gotten all too accustomed to the scowls and snide remarks from the locals who've suffered the brunt end of her former countrymen's invasion. She'd done her best to try to hide her accent, but most tend to notice the "Nehrimese bitch" the second she opens her mouth.
[Not wanting to finish that thought, Jade slips her backpack around and starts rummaging through it while she continues:] Anyways, it won't be the city proper. It's no house in the Larxes, but I'm not in the mood to deal with those upper-level snobs, myself.
[Finally, she fishes a hooded travel cloak from her backpack and just chucks it at Kainé. Whether the other woman catches it or lets it fall in the dirt matters very little, since the fabric is already pretty weathered and worn.]
Just put this on. Someone who looks like me will probably still stick out more than someone like you even in the Undercity, but still. Don't want people getting the idea that you're a, er... representative of the Silver Cloud or something.
[Not that Jade would judge, but something tells her that Kainé wouldn't be all the way out here if she was an Undercity prostitute.]
And freezes, noticing something disturbing; at least to her.
It's getting darker as though the light is literally being sucked away, from more than just the cloud cover. When Kainé speaks again, there's a tremor in her voice.]
W... what the hell's happening? [She whirls back around to face Jade, her eyes wide with fear.] Where's the light going? Shit! This is bad... Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
[Of all the turns Jade could've expected this conversation to take, this certainly wasn't it. She stares at Kainé, observing her response and not even dignifying her snubbing the cloak as she closes the opening to her bag. Oh well, that thing was already dirty, anyway.
[When she looks up, she sees that it is getting dark outside. It's an odd solace to her that she's never quite thought about before -- the burning, blinding light in her visions were always unsettling, always harrowing to wake up from, that the night and its stretching shadows were more of a comfort than anything else.
[For Kainé, it seems to present something entirely else.]
Guess it's later than I thought? We'll be fine if we stay on the road. Oh, and... Maybe this'll help.
[Despite how Kainé reacted to her magic earlier, Jade doesn't hesitate to summon a ball of light from the palm of her hand. It raises into existence like a tiny sun, warm and illuminating the area, casting a pale, yellowish glow on her face.
[Who knows, maybe Kainé has a fear of the dark. Maybe she spent her life underground and never seen day cycles before. Few things would surprise her at this point.]
[For Kainé, dark means danger. Dark means death. And so she barely registers the other woman's assurance until the ball of light is formed in Jade's hand.
This time, Kainé doesn't even react negatively, in fact, she visibly relaxes, moving closer with the warm illumination working as a protective barrier. Still, she dismisses her weapons and wraps her arms comfortingly and protectively around herself; though she still remains vigilant enough that she can react should anything actually attack.]
Th... thanks. [A brief moment of vulnerability before she falls back into her usual brash attitude. Her body language still remains unsure though.]
So how far we gotta go? No stops, we keep going until... [A small hesitation.] until this dark is fucking behind us.
[Pleasantly surprised by Kainé's reaction, Jade keeps the light up. She dignifies that fleeting moment of gratitude with a fleeting smile of her own.]
No problem.
[It really isn't, though. The spell doesn't drain her too much, so it's not like she'll drop dead in the middle of the road just for maintaining a ball of magic light at the very least.
[As for her question... Jade shrugs. She isn't put off by Kainé's mannerisms, sensing there being a good reason as to why she's so crass and guarded. It's a defense mechanism Jade herself is all too familiar with.]
Just a few miles. We could probably get there faster if I could find where my donkey ran off to...
[She notices the smile and has to look away or her mask might come undone. Kainé has no idea that Jade can see right through her.
At the shrug and answer, Kainé huffs impatiently, though her interest is soon peaked when the other woman mentions a 'donkey.' She raises a brow and turns her attention back to Jade as they walk.]
What the hell's a donkey? And if it'll get us there faster, find it.
[Before Jade could comment on just how comfortable Kainé seems to be, barking orders at her like that... she realizes something.]
Could maybe do one better, actually.
[One hand still holding the mage light, she fishes a whistle from her pocket. It looks pretty worthless, hence why the bounty hunters probably didn't bother taking it from her when they captured her.
[Taking a few steps down the road, Jade turns towards the forest and blows the whistle. Almost a whole minute passes of her just standing there, patiently holding the ball of light as the sun closes over the horizon and the two moons fit the sky.
[Eventually, hoofbeats echo from the distance. Emerging from the trees, a somewhat small, long-eared donkey appears, black eyes blinking as it stops between Jade and Kainé. Well, "small" is pretty relative to Jade. Next to Kainé, the animal is pretty average-sized.
[Putting the whistle back in her pocket, she shrugs.]
Huh. Wasn't sure that'd actually work, to be honest.
[But she's glad it did. Her feet are sore, and she still feels rather battered after her captivity.]
[Jade blows the whistle and Kainé raises an eyebrow. Just about before the full minute passes, she huffs and speaks up, and clapping her hands slowly.]
That was a great song and all, but can we get back on the fucking road?
[No sooner had the words left her mouth then the galloping is heard and the animal is standing before them. Kainé blinks sheepishly for a moment then quickly changes the subject.]
That's a 'donkey'? [Kainé puts a hand on her hip and tilts her head a little. It's kind of cute. Kainé has a bit of a soft spot for animals. She wouldn't be caught dead saying so aloud though.] You sure it can carry us both?
[Ignoring Kainé, Jade simply waited until the donkey answered her call. After what had happened -- being ambushed by the bounty hunters -- she almost didn't expect it to work.
[More than relieved to see her hoofed buddy again, Jade greets the animal with a pat on its nose. She bumps its forehead with her own for a moment in relief that she didn't lose her mount for good.]
This is Butterstuff.
[Jade pats him on the nose a few more times before turning back to Kainé with a mild, knowing look.]
And donkeys are capable of carrying people and large cargo. So... yes, he can carry us both. Probably.
[As she says this, she hops onto the donkey's back with ease, his "saddle" being not much more than a blanket. She has to grab onto his wiry mane for purchase, but it's become like second nature to her now.
[Looking down at Kainé now, Jade holds out her hand to help the other woman mount the creature, leaving her just enough space to sit in front of Jade.]
[Kainé watches as the animal trots up. It's smaller than a boar, but if Jade says it can carry both of them, then whatever. If it means getting somewhere where there's more light faster, that's all the better. She can already feel Tyrann stirring and she doesn't like it.
She even thinks it's kind of cute. Until Jade introduces the donkey by name and Kainé can't help but raise a brow and comment on the name choice sarcastically.]
Butter...stuff. Right...
[Again, she just observes as the other woman mounts the donkey and shrugs, strolling up and debating whether she should take the offered help.
At length, she decides it's not pity and easily climbs into the intended space.]
I'll be fine. I've ridden boars plenty.
[Her body does stiffen a little for two reasons though. The fact that Tyrann's awareness is growing. It won't be long before they have to hear his shit again, but what makes her even more nervous is when she realizes exactly how close she is to Jade. She can feel the other woman's front pressed up against her pretty-much bare back. Kainé really hopes Jade doesn't notice how she awkwardly bites at her lower lip and the faint flush dusting her cheeks.
Look, she's not used to being this close to anyone! People aren't supposed to touch her! She's a curse! A freak!
Kainé squeezes her eyes shut, hoping that Tyrann doesn't catch on to her internal struggle and out her. In any case, she's pretty quiet when they set off.]
[If Jade is taking offense to Kainé's reaction to the name of her donkey, she doesn't let it show. She just shrugs.]
Hey, it's better than sticking to some boring shit like "Whirlwind".
[All Jade had to do was kill a troll, and she got this donkey for her efforts. She can't complain either way.
[With Kainé joining her, neither does the donkey, as Butterstuff seems to carry the two women just fine on his back. Jade reaches around Kainé's sides, one hand gripping the thick mane of the animal. This of course means that Jade's front is pressed up against the other woman's back, but she assumes it's fine -- she's not exactly the most endowed in the chest area to make it awkward, or so she thinks.]
Just hold on right here, okay?
[Jade pulls at the mane with a gloved fist, as if showing Kainé how to best stay on. Without a proper saddle, it might take some additional balance on both women's part, but Jade makes sure not to go too fast too suddenly.
[Still, the donkey is quicker than if they were hoofing it on foot, his pace starting out in a canter. If there's any time in which Kainé seems to tilt from one side or another, Jade doesn't hesitate to bring her free hand up to support her waist, not really thinking about how intimate it might come across between her wearing gloves and the act being necessary.
[Admittedly, it is rather difficult to keep her thoughts in check. Kainé is beautiful, and her clothes leave very little to the imagination -- heck, Jade's seen whores in the brothel wear more clothing than her rescuer. Far be it from her to gripe about being saved by a gorgeous scantily clad woman with a pair of swords, even if it's unusual around these parts.]
[Oh, if Kainé was only aware of that missed opportunistic pun she just made. Weiss would have groaned. It might have been glorious. Alas...
She reaches out with a gloved hand of her own, another retort on her tongue.]
Look! I know how to ri...de...
[Kainé trails off as the swell of the other woman's breasts presses flush to her back. Her breath catches and her hand slips its grip from the donkey's mane, resulting in her, indeed, teetering to the side.
And Jade's save doesn't make it any better, Kainé's side twitching slightly as she swallows and attempts to compose herself.
In the back of her mind, Tyrann laughs and speaks, only heard by her.
You're welcome Sunshine. Bwa ha ha!
Of course! She killed shit! Dammit!
You asshole! I bet you're really getting off on this aren't you?
Kainé spits back in her head, to which Tyrann laughs harder.
No, but you will, coutesy of me. What can I say? I'm a generous bastard. Enjoy that, Sunshine. I sure as hell will! Kya ha ha!
Jade may or may not note that Kainé's body language indicates a jumble of emotions. Anger, discomfort, shame, dread, arousal.
Maybe she can find a way to sneak off alone to take care of Tyrann's gift
It takes her a bit, but Kainé finally manages to speak.]
How much longer?
[She attempts impatience, but her tone is more wavering, and when she realizes it, she hastily fumbles for an excuse.]
[Something about the totally candid way Kainé says the name causes Jade to pause for a bit, as if the realization sinks in.]
Bad... Ass...
[And then she just fucking laughs -- maybe harder than she probably should have, given the questionable state of her ribs at the moment. Still, she laughs through the pain.]
Damn! Why didn't I ever think of that?
[She's having second thoughts on her donkey's name now. Oh well.
[It does give her something else to think about rather than dwell on the closeness of the other woman, though it doesn't quite occur to her that Kainé might be having problems for entirely different reasons. The way she stirs against her does make Jade worry that she's maybe making the young woman a little uncomfortable, especially when she speaks up...]
Uhm, probably about twenty minutes, tops? But... if you gotta piss, I'd suggest you do it somewhere outside. I don't exactly have working plumbing at this place.
[Unlike the topside homes with their pipes and tinkerings, the denizens of the Undercity aren't quite as fortunate.]
[Jade's reaction has her suddenly feeling self-conscious, which is, of course, masked by a display of violent insults. Kainé scowls before crossing her arms under her bust and shooting thr other woman a threatening look.]
What the fuck is your deal? You better shut the hell up or I'll quiet you myself by shoving your goddamn head up that donky's ass!
[Oh Kainé]
Plumbing? What the fuck...? Whatever forget it. Let's just stop. [She tries to think of a bluff but comes up short, instead quickly swinging from the donky's back (even if they're still moving) and being sure to keep her own back to the other woman. She looks once more over her shoulder.] I might be a bit...
It's a really big piss.
[Before Jade can interject, she's off, hurriedly searching for a suitable clump of bushes, far enough from the main road. Even her fear of the dark is stronger than the disgust she's feeling in herself right about now.]
Say one goddamn thing and I fucking swear I'll slit my own damn throat. Just shut up and let's get this over with.
[In fact, before the Shade can even start, she growls internally. Which is enough to keep him quiet, for the moment.]
[Perhaps it helps that Jade has endured the company of many prickly individuals that she is able to tolerate the insults, coupled with the fact that... Well, Kainé did also just save her worthless ass not long ago.
[It also helps that she's hot, and certainly not someone Jade would kick out of bed. But she does her best to contain those kinds of thoughts for now, not wanting to make this situation any more awkward than it kinda already is.]
Hey. Say what you want about me, but don't do my donkey dirty like that.
[Leave Butters out of this.
[Then she gives a start when Kainé just fucks off mid-step. Jade leans back, pulling her hands away when Kainé disappears into the forest.]
Well, alright then...
[She falls quiet, and for a while she just sits there. It's already getting late, but Jade doesn't see herself as having anywhere else to be...
[So she waits, figuring that it's the least she can do.
[Some time passes before it occurs to Jade just how big of a piss does this have to be, really? to justify how long Kainé is taking. Maybe she had second thoughts about accompanying Jade and decided to go her own way.]
Maybe she fell in...? [Jade comments to herself, before dismounting the donkey as well. She turns, giving him a quick pat on the face, and talks as if he can understand her:] Stay here, okay? I'm just... gonna go check on our new "friend".
Hurt/comfort.
She's really trying to hold her shit together right now.]
no subject
The whole way, aside from having no trouble supporting the other woman, Kainé walks in silence.]
no subject
The soul bound to it and herself had gotten her out of many binds, when her hands are free to summon them -- a condition she had been deprived of when she had her hands tied behind her back.]
no subject
I'm hungry!
Kainé makes a face, then sighs.
The silence was nice while it lasted...]

But try reasoning with a splitting ache tearing through her brain -- it won't work out.]
no subject
And I am. Unless you think that goddamn corpse over there, is about to join our merry little band?
no subject
There's a flicker of light in her eyes; magic radiating from her aura, cold and pale all around her.]
no subject
[Kainé growls and her gaze narrows as Jade calls her spells.]
Only Shades can use magic! What are you?
[Kainé prepares to lunge, knowing that those spells, however she may heal from them, will still hurt like a bitch!
The Shade inhabiting her body laughs almost maniacally.
Kya ha ha! Yes! Yes! Rip her to shreds!
The moment the word, "sunshine" is spat from the other women, Kainé freezes in her tracks; her eyes wide as dinner plates.]
Y... you can hear him?
[Well, well, well, what do we have here, Sunshine? A little eavesdropper?
Kainé makes another face.
Why don't you take out little-miss-honey-cheeks over there, and let's be on our way. We got...]
Fuck off, asshole!
[She lowers her weapons, ever so slightly and addresses Jade again.]
Don't listen to a goddamn word that bastard says! Got it? If you can really hear him, he's no friend of mine!
[Aww, c'mon Sunshine, don't be like that!
Now Kainé brings her blades down to her sides, but doesn't dismiss them wholly.]
Fuck him. He's a goddamn Shade! And he shares my body. Not by choice.
no subject
Not to mention this aura is quite... otherworldly, in very much the most literal sense.]
no subject
Shades are... [There's a brief moment where she seems to be contemplating something, but then her expression hardens again and her gaze returns to meet Jades. She does not move her hands at all. All of the venom is in her eyes.] MONSTERS! Monsters that deserve nothing more than a painful, agonizing, death!
[It's clear she's got a history with the creatures; and an intense hatred. Surprisingly, even though Kainé had just said the thing talking to them is a shade, it still laughs sadistically.]
I'm Shade-possessed. His name's Tyrann. [She dismisses her weapons fully.] And I'm Kainé.
no subject
[Except maybe for one, but Jade swore to secrecy when it came to Calia's... condition. Surely it's not the same case for Kainé, right?]
no subject
Get on with it!']
no subject
[Probably.]
no subject
Kainé has an annoying feeling that it's gonna be awhile.]
no subject
[Which is kind of her preference at the moment.]
no subject
Kainé just shrugs, not giving the retort a second thought. What she does react to, is the burn about her camp. She crosses her arms under her bust and narrows her eyes.]
Don't be stupid. We probably just came out a different way. [Kainé does actually listen to the idea though, but looks hesitant at the mention of going to a city. Her expression drops and she averts her gaze.]
I don't go into cities. I'm not...
[The hand gripping her Shade arm, subconsciously slides a little higher out of her own discomfort.]
no subject
[Not that Jade would judge, but something tells her that Kainé wouldn't be all the way out here if she was an Undercity prostitute.]
no subject
[She turns before Jade even throws the cloak...
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
no subject
Few things would surprise her at this point.]
no subject
This time, Kainé doesn't even react negatively, in fact, she visibly relaxes, moving closer with the warm illumination working as a protective barrier. Still, she dismisses her weapons and wraps her arms comfortingly and protectively around herself; though she still remains vigilant enough that she can react should anything actually attack.]
Th... thanks. [A brief moment of vulnerability before she falls back into her usual brash attitude. Her body language still remains unsure though.]
So how far we gotta go? No stops, we keep going until... [A small hesitation.] until this dark is fucking behind us.
no subject
[Yes, she has a donkey.]
no subject
At the shrug and answer, Kainé huffs impatiently, though her interest is soon peaked when the other woman mentions a 'donkey.' She raises a brow and turns her attention back to Jade as they walk.]
What the hell's a donkey? And if it'll get us there faster, find it.
no subject

She wouldn't be caught dead saying so aloud though.] You sure it can carry us both?
no subject
C'mon. It's not that hard once you're used to it.
no subject

Can't sleep... pain... gonna try this.
I woulda named her Bad-ass.
I really gotta take a piss!
weh, hope you're feeling better. :c
Bad...
Cw: mention of suicide. I can change if needed.
What the fuck is your deal? You better shut the hell up or I'll quiet you myself by shoving your goddamn head up that donky's ass!
[
Oh Kainé]Plumbing?
Which is enough to keep him quiet, for the moment.]
no subject
